3.17 Preservation of Language

Why languages die

Language death occurs when a language has no remaining native speakers, often due to colonization, globalization, forced assimilation, or economic pressure to adopt a dominant tongue. Languages spoken by small, isolated groups are especially vulnerable. UNESCO estimates thousands of the world's languages are endangered, with linguistic diversity shrinking as global connectivity increases.

Efforts to preserve languages

Governments and communities use language preservation strategies like official recognition, bilingual education, media broadcasts, and dictionaries/documentation projects. Revitalization movements (e.g., Hebrew, Welsh, Maori) actively try to increase speakers of a declining language through immersion schools and cultural programs, reversing decline rather than just recording it.

Isolation vs. globalization

Isolated languages (like Icelandic) change slowly and retain unique features due to limited outside contact. Globalization and migration spread lingua francas such as English, accelerating the decline of minority languages as speakers shift to dominant languages for economic and social opportunity, threatening local cultural identity.
