4.1 Political and Economic Alliances

Why states cooperate

Supranationalism occurs when states voluntarily give up some sovereignty to join a larger political/economic body for shared benefits like security, trade, or influence. Alliances form because pooling resources and coordinating policy can help members compete globally, defend against threats, and boost economic growth beyond what any single state could achieve alone.

Key economic alliances

Free trade zones (e.g., NAFTA/USMCA) reduce tariffs between members. The EU goes further, creating a common market, shared currency (the euro) for many members, and open borders. OPEC coordinates oil production/prices among petroleum-exporting states. These alliances increase trade, but members sacrifice some control over their own economic policy.

Key political/military alliances

NATO is a military alliance where an attack on one member is treated as an attack on all (collective security). The United Nations promotes cooperation on peace, human rights, and development. Regional organizations like the African Union and ASEAN promote political/economic cooperation among neighboring states, though centrifugal forces like nationalism can strain unity.
