3.16 Diffusion of Languages

How languages spread

Languages diffuse through relocation diffusion (migrants carry a language to new places, like English to North America) and expansion diffusion — including hierarchical diffusion (spreading from cities/leaders outward) and contagious diffusion (spreading through direct contact regardless of status). Trade, colonization, migration, and conquest are major drivers of language diffusion.

Language change and blending

Contact between languages creates new forms. A pidgin is a simplified mix used for trade between groups with no shared language. If it becomes a community's native tongue passed to children, it develops into a creole. A lingua franca (e.g., English, Swahili) is used for communication between speakers of different native languages.

Isolation preserves language

When groups are geographically or socially isolated, their language changes slowly, forming an isolated language (e.g., Icelandic, Basque) with few or no close relatives. Colonialism and imperialism spread global languages like English, Spanish, and French widely, often replacing or marginalizing indigenous languages.
