2.8 Branding
What is Branding?
Branding is the process of creating a unique name, symbol, or design that identifies a product and distinguishes it from competitors. A strong brand identity builds customer recognition, trust, and loyalty. Businesses use branding to communicate their values and create an emotional connection with consumers, which can justify premium pricing and repeat purchases.
Brand Equity and Loyalty
Brand equity is the value a brand adds to a product beyond its functional benefits, based on consumer perception and reputation. High brand equity leads to brand loyalty, where customers consistently choose one brand over others. Companies protect this value through trademarks, which legally register names, logos, and slogans to prevent unauthorized use.
Elements of Brand Strategy
Effective branding includes a memorable brand name, a visual logo, consistent brand voice, and a clear value proposition. Brand positioning shapes how consumers perceive a product relative to competitors. Companies may also use co-branding (partnering with another brand) or brand extension (using an established brand name on new products) to grow market presence.
