2.7 The Marketing Mix: Promotion
Promotion in the Marketing Mix
Promotion is the element of the marketing mix that communicates a product's value to persuade customers to buy. It informs, persuades, and reminds consumers. Effective promotion builds brand awareness, differentiates a product from competitors, and drives sales by connecting the right message to the right audience through the right channels.
The Promotional Mix
The promotional mix blends tools businesses use: advertising (paid, non-personal messages via media), personal selling (direct interaction with customers), sales promotion (short-term incentives like coupons or discounts), and public relations (unpaid, managed communication to build goodwill, like press releases). Companies mix these based on budget, audience, and goals.
Choosing Promotional Strategy
Businesses select promotion methods based on target market, budget, product type, and life cycle stage. Push strategy promotes to intermediaries (wholesalers/retailers) to push products to consumers; pull strategy targets consumers directly (ads) so they demand products, pulling them through the channel. Digital tools like social media expand reach affordably.
