3.1 The Role of Accounting and Finance
Why Accounting and Finance Matter
Accounting is the process of recording, summarizing, and reporting a business's financial transactions. Finance uses that information to plan, raise capital, and make decisions about spending, saving, and investing. Together they help a business track performance, meet legal obligations, and make informed decisions to stay profitable and solvent.
Key Users of Financial Information
Both internal stakeholders (owners, managers, employees) and external stakeholders (investors, creditors, government agencies, suppliers) rely on accurate financial data. Managers use it to plan budgets and operations; investors and creditors use it to assess risk before lending money or buying shares; government agencies use it to ensure tax compliance.
Accounting vs. Finance Functions
Accounting focuses on recording past transactions and producing financial statements (like income statements and balance sheets). Finance focuses on using that data to make forward-looking decisions — such as budgeting, investing, and securing funding. Both work together so businesses can measure profitability and plan for growth.
