9.11 Effects of Globalization
Culture goes global
Globalization spread popular culture worldwide through media, film, music, and the internet, often centered on Western/American products (McDonald's, Hollywood). Critics call this cultural imperialism or homogenization, while others argue local cultures adapt and blend global influences, creating hybridization rather than simple erasure of tradition.
Rising inequality and disease
Global trade and finance widened gaps between rich and poor nations and within societies, as multinational corporations and wealthy elites captured most gains. Increased travel and interconnectedness also accelerated the spread of diseases like HIV/AIDS, SARS, and COVID-19 across borders faster than ever before.
Environment and backlash
Industrialization and consumption tied to globalization drove climate change, deforestation, and pollution, prompting international environmental movements and agreements like the Paris Agreement. Simultaneously, backlash emerged: nationalist and populist movements, anti-globalization protests (e.g., WTO protests), and calls to protect local jobs and cultures from global economic forces.
