9.10 Institutions Developing in a Globalized World
Economic institutions coordinate globalization
After WWII, states built institutions to stabilize and expand global trade and finance. The United Nations (1945) promotes peace and cooperation. The World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) fund development and stabilize currencies. The World Trade Organization (WTO, 1995) regulates international trade rules, reducing tariffs and settling disputes between member nations.
Regional and political blocs
Nations formed regional organizations to boost trade and cooperation: the European Union (EU) created a shared market and currency (euro); NAFTA (now USMCA) linked the US, Canada, and Mexico economically. Political/military alliances like NATO persisted from the Cold War, while groups like OPEC let oil-producing states coordinate pricing and production.
NGOs and global civil society
Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) like the Red Cross, Amnesty International, and Doctors Without Borders address humanitarian, environmental, and human rights issues beyond state borders. These institutions reflect increased global interconnection, but critics argue they can undermine national sovereignty or unevenly benefit wealthy nations over developing ones.
