AP World History: Modern · Unit 3: Land-Based Empires
3.1 Empires Expand
Gunpowder empires rise
Between 1450-1750, land-based empires used gunpowder weapons (cannons, muskets) to conquer neighboring territories and build large, centralized states. Key examples include the Ottoman, Safavid, Mughal, Ming/Qing, and Russian empires. Superior military technology let rulers overpower rivals with older weapons, siege heavier fortifications, and control vast territories with diverse populations.
Expansion strategies
Empires expanded through military conquest, absorbing new lands and peoples. The Ottomans expanded across the Balkans, North Africa, and the Middle East; the Mughals conquered most of South Asia; the Qing expanded into Central Asia and Taiwan; Russia expanded across Siberia. Rulers relied on standing armies, warrior aristocracies, and administrative innovation to hold territory.
Justifying and legitimizing rule
Rulers used various methods to legitimize expanded authority: Ottoman sultans claimed the title of caliph; Mughal emperors blended Persian, Islamic, and Hindu traditions; Russian tsars invoked Orthodox Christianity and claimed descent from Byzantine authority. Monumental architecture, art, and court rituals reinforced imperial power and divine sanction.
