AP Research · Unit 5: The Academic Paper & Defense
5.1 Structuring the Paper
Standard sections
An academic paper typically has an introduction (question and significance), literature review, method, results/findings, discussion, and conclusion — plus references.
The abstract
An abstract is a short summary (often 150–250 words) placed first, giving the question, method, findings, and significance so readers grasp the study at a glance.
Logical flow
Each section builds on the last: the gap justifies the method; the method produces results; the discussion interprets them. The paper should read as one coherent argument.
