4.4 Shapes of States

Why shape matters

A state's shape affects governance, communication, defense, and cohesion. Geographers classify states into five basic shapes: compact, elongated, fragmented, perforated, and prorupted. Shape influences how easily a government can administer territory, move resources, and defend borders.

Compact vs. elongated

Compact states (e.g., Poland, Kenya) have roughly circular shapes where distance from center to edge is similar, making internal communication and defense efficient. Elongated states (e.g., Chile, Vietnam) are long and narrow, which can cause poor internal communication and isolate peripheral regions from the capital.

Fragmented, perforated, and prorupted

Fragmented states (e.g., Indonesia, Philippines) are separated by water or other territory, complicating unity. Perforated states (e.g., South Africa, which surrounds Lesotho) completely surround another state, limiting territorial control. Prorupted states (e.g., Namibia, Thailand) have a narrow extension (panhandle) providing access to resources like a coastline or river.

Key terms

Compact state
A state where distance from the center to the border is roughly equal, easing administration and defense (e.g., Poland, Kenya).
Elongated state
A long, narrow state that may struggle with internal communication and control over distant areas (e.g., Chile, Vietnam).
Fragmented state
A state made of disconnected pieces separated by water or other territory (e.g., Indonesia, Philippines).
Perforated state
A state that completely surrounds another independent state, creating a 'hole' in its territory (e.g., South Africa around Lesotho).
Prorupted state
A state with a narrow, panhandle-like extension, often to access a resource or coastline (e.g., Namibia, Thailand).
