4.3 Nations and Nationalities

Nation vs. State vs. Nation-State

A nation is a group of people with shared culture, history, language, or identity who see themselves as a unified people. A state is a politically organized territory with sovereignty. A nation-state occurs when a nation's boundaries roughly match a state's boundaries — Japan is a classic near-example, though true nation-states are rare.

Multinational States and Multi-State Nations

A multinational state contains more than one nation within its borders (e.g., the United Kingdom contains English, Scottish, and Welsh nations). A multi-state nation exists when a single nation is spread across multiple states, like the Kurds across Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Syria. These mismatches often fuel political tension.

Nationalism, Stateless Nations, and Autonomy

Nationalism is intense devotion and loyalty to one's nation, often driving movements for self-rule. A stateless nation lacks a sovereign territory of its own, like the Kurds or Palestinians. Some nations gain partial self-governance through autonomous regions (e.g., Hong Kong) without full independence, easing—but not eliminating—separatist pressures.
