3.3 Culture and Identity
Culture shapes identity
Culture is the shared beliefs, practices, technology, and material objects that characterize a group. Identity is how individuals and groups define themselves, often shaped by culture, place, gender, ethnicity, and religion. Geographers study how place contributes to identity, since where people live influences customs, language, and traditions passed down over generations.
Popular vs. folk culture
Folk culture is traditional, practiced by small, homogeneous groups in relatively isolated areas, and changes slowly (e.g., traditional dress, local foods). Popular culture is widespread, found in heterogeneous societies, spreads rapidly via media and technology, and changes quickly (e.g., fast food chains, global music trends). Popular culture often threatens folk traditions through cultural diffusion.
Gender and identity
Gender identity refers to socially constructed roles and expectations tied to being male or female, which vary across cultures and places. Geographers examine how landscapes reflect gender roles, such as unequal access to space, employment, or education. Identity is also shaped by intersections of race, ethnicity, sexuality, and nationality, creating complex, place-based social patterns.
