3.2 Cultural Landscapes

What is a cultural landscape?

A cultural landscape is the visible imprint of human activity and culture on the physical environment. It includes buildings, land use, agriculture, and symbols that reflect a group's values and beliefs. Landscapes reveal sequent occupance — layers left by successive cultures over time, like archaeological layers of human influence.

Reading landscapes for meaning

Geographers study cultural landscapes to infer values, religion, economy, and identity. Toponyms (place names), architecture, religious structures, and field patterns all offer clues. Landscapes can be shaped by placelessness from globalization (identical strip malls, fast food chains) or maintain unique sense of place through local traditions and design.

Landscapes as identity and power

Cultural landscapes can express ethnic identity (Chinatowns, religious enclaves) or political power (monuments, capital cities). They also reflect globalization's homogenizing effects, seen in the spread of similar architecture and commercial signage worldwide, sometimes clashing with efforts to preserve local cultural identity.
