3.12 Diffusion of Religion

Universalizing vs. Ethnic religion diffusion

Universalizing religions (Christianity, Islam, Buddhism) actively seek converts and spread mainly through relocation diffusion (migrants, missionaries, traders carrying beliefs to new places) and hierarchical diffusion (leaders/rulers adopting the faith, spreading it downward). Ethnic religions (Hinduism, Judaism) spread mostly by relocation diffusion through migration and birth within a group, rarely seeking converts, so they stay geographically concentrated.

Contagious diffusion and religious spread

Contagious diffusion spreads a religion rapidly through direct, widespread contact with little regard for social status — like early Christianity spreading through the Roman Empire via trade routes and everyday interaction. Islam spread similarly through trade networks across the Arabian Peninsula, North Africa, and into Southeast Asia via merchants.

Key historical examples

Buddhism diffused hierarchically from India when Emperor Ashoka converted and sent missionaries outward, then spread contagiously along trade routes (Silk Road) into East Asia. Islam spread through military conquest, trade, and pilgrimage (hajj). Christianity spread through the Roman Empire's road network, colonization, and missionary work into the Americas and Africa.
