3.11 Types of Religions

Universalizing vs. Ethnic Religions

Universalizing religions (Christianity, Islam, Buddhism) actively seek converts and appeal to all people everywhere, spreading through relocation diffusion and missionary work. Ethnic religions (Hinduism, Judaism) appeal to a specific group tied to a particular place, ethnicity, or ancestry, and spread mainly through relocation diffusion as people migrate, not through conversion efforts.

Branches, Denominations, and Sects

Religions are organized hierarchically: a branch is a large, fundamental division (e.g., Catholicism vs. Protestantism within Christianity); a denomination is a division within a branch (e.g., Baptist, Lutheran); a sect is a small group that has broken away from an established denomination, often over doctrinal disputes.

Animism and Syncretic Religions

Animism is the belief that spirits and souls inhabit objects like animals, plants, and natural features, common among some indigenous ethnic religions. Syncretic religions blend elements from multiple faiths, such as Vodun in Haiti combining Catholic and West African traditions — a result of cultural diffusion and contact between belief systems.
