3.3 Imparfait vs. Passé Composé
The imperfect
The imparfait describes ongoing, habitual, or background past ('was doing,' 'used to do'). Endings: -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient on the nous-stem: 'je parlais,' 'nous finissions.'
The contrast
Passé composé = a completed action (a single event). Imparfait = the ongoing scene, description, or repeated habit around it. 'Je regardais la télé quand le téléphone a sonné.'
Cue words
Imparfait cues: souvent, toujours, d'habitude, quand j'étais petit. Passé composé cues: soudain, hier, une fois, tout à coup.
