4.12 Rise of Napoleon Bonaparte

From Soldier to Consul

Napoleon Bonaparte rose through the military during the French Revolution, gaining fame for victories in Italy and dramatically seizing power in the Coup of 18 Brumaire (1799), overthrowing the Directory. He became First Consul, consolidating executive power and ending the chaotic revolutionary government while claiming to preserve revolutionary ideals.

Consolidating Power

Napoleon crafted a new constitution concentrating authority in himself, then crowned himself Emperor in 1804, ending the Republic. He used plebiscites to legitimize his rule with a veneer of popular consent, blending revolutionary rhetoric with authoritarian control and centralized bureaucracy.

Domestic Reforms

Napoleon stabilized France through the Napoleonic Code (equality before law, property rights, but limited women's rights), the Concordat of 1801 with the Pope (restoring Catholicism while keeping state control), and a centralized administrative/educational system that preserved key revolutionary gains like legal equality and abolition of feudal privilege.
