5.4 Effects of Computing

Beneficial and Harmful Effects

Computing innovations can have beneficial, harmful, or both effects simultaneously, often depending on context and user. For example, social media connects people globally (beneficial) but can spread misinformation and enable cyberbullying (harmful). AP requires evaluating both intended and unintended effects of an innovation.

Economic, Social, and Cultural Effects

Computing innovations reshape economies (new jobs, automation displacing workers), social interactions (online communities, remote work), and culture (streaming media, digital art). These effects can be different across groups — a change beneficial for one population may harm another, raising fairness concerns.

The Digital Divide

The digital divide is the gap between those with reliable access to computing technology/internet and those without. It's caused by factors like income, geography (rural vs. urban), infrastructure, and age. This divide limits access to information, education, and economic opportunity for underserved populations.
