AP Comparative Government & Politics · Unit 1: Political Systems, Regimes & Governments
1.5 Authoritarian Regimes
What defines authoritarian regimes
Authoritarian regimes concentrate political power in the hands of a single leader, small elite, or one-party structure, with little to no accountability to citizens. Political pluralism and free elections are limited or absent, and civil liberties like free press and free speech are restricted. Power is maintained through coercion, propaganda, patronage, and control of institutions rather than genuine popular consent.
Types of authoritarian rule
Authoritarian systems vary: one-party states (like China) allow only one party to hold real power; personalist/military regimes center power in a dictator or the armed forces (historically seen in Nigeria and Iran under the Shah); theocracies like Iran blend religious authority with state control. All limit competition but differ in how power is organized and legitimized.
Maintaining control
Authoritarian leaders use coercion (police, military, surveillance), co-optation (rewarding loyal elites with patronage), and censorship/propaganda to control information and suppress dissent. Weak or nonexistent rule of law, controlled judiciaries, and restricted civil society organizations prevent challenges to the regime, while nominal elections may be held to create an illusion of legitimacy.
