AP Business & Personal Finance · Unit 5: Personal Goals, Budgeting & Investing
5.1 Establishing Financial Goals
SMART Financial Goals
Effective financial goals follow the SMART framework: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Instead of "save money," a SMART goal is "save $2,000 for an emergency fund in 12 months." Clear goals guide budgeting decisions and help track progress, making it easier to stay motivated and adjust spending habits.
Short-, Mid-, and Long-Term Goals
Financial goals are categorized by time horizon: short-term (under 1 year, e.g., building an emergency fund), mid-term (1-5 years, e.g., saving for a car or down payment), and long-term (5+ years, e.g., retirement or a child's education). Prioritizing goals by timeframe and importance helps allocate limited income effectively across competing needs.
Values, Needs, and Opportunity Cost
Financial goals should reflect personal values and distinguish needs (essentials like housing) from wants (discretionary items). Every financial choice involves opportunity cost — the value of the next-best alternative given up. Setting goals forces individuals to prioritize, since resources are limited and cannot fund every want simultaneously.
