4.7 Risk Management

What is Risk Management?

Risk management is the process of identifying, evaluating, and addressing potential losses to a business or individual. Businesses face risks like theft, natural disasters, lawsuits, and economic downturns. Managing risk well protects assets, ensures continuity, and can even create a competitive advantage by keeping costs and disruptions lower than competitors face.

Four Risk Management Strategies

There are four core strategies: avoidance (eliminating the risky activity entirely), reduction (taking steps to lessen likelihood or impact, like safety training), transfer (shifting risk to another party, typically through insurance), and retention/acceptance (knowingly keeping the risk, often because it's small or costly to address otherwise).

Insurance as Risk Transfer

Insurance is a contract where a business pays a premium to an insurer, who agrees to cover specified losses (like property damage, liability, or health claims). It pools risk across many policyholders so no single loss is catastrophic. Common business insurance includes liability, property, workers' compensation, and business interruption insurance.
