4.1 The Need for Management and Leadership

Why businesses need management

Management is the process of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling resources to achieve organizational goals. As a business grows, one owner can't do everything — managers coordinate people, money, materials, and time so the company runs efficiently and stays focused on its objectives.

Management vs. leadership

Management focuses on organizing tasks, systems, and resources to meet goals — planning budgets, assigning duties, monitoring results. Leadership focuses on inspiring, motivating, and influencing people toward a shared vision. A good manager isn't always a great leader, and vice versa, but successful businesses need both skills working together.

Core functions of management

The four key functions are planning (setting goals and strategies), organizing (arranging resources and structure), leading (directing and motivating employees), and controlling (monitoring performance and making adjustments). Together these functions help a business adapt to change, solve problems, and stay competitive.
