2.6 The Impact of Colonization

European colonization disrupts African societies

Beginning in the late 1400s, European colonization of Africa and the Americas intertwined with the transatlantic slave trade, disrupting existing African political, economic, and social structures. Coastal kingdoms sometimes engaged in trade with Europeans, while colonization brought new forms of exploitation, resource extraction, and violence that reshaped African societies for centuries.

Forced migration and the plantation system

Colonization created the demand for enslaved labor that fueled the transatlantic slave trade, forcibly transporting millions of Africans to the Americas. This labor sustained plantation economies producing sugar, tobacco, rice, and cotton, generating enormous wealth for European colonizers while devastating African communities through population loss and social upheaval.

Legacies of colonization

Colonization produced lasting effects still studied today: racial hierarchies, cultural displacement, and economic systems built on exploitation. African cultural practices, languages, and identities were suppressed or transformed, yet enslaved and colonized peoples preserved and adapted traditions, laying groundwork for resistance and the development of new African diasporic cultures.
