2.5 Justifications for Slavery

Religious & Biblical Justifications

Enslavers used selective scripture readings, especially the Curse of Ham, to argue that Black people were destined for servitude. Missionaries and slaveholders claimed enslavement Christianized and civilized Africans, framing bondage as spiritually beneficial. These arguments helped reconcile slavery with professed Christian morality in American society.

Pseudo-Scientific Racism

By the 18th–19th centuries, thinkers developed pseudo-scientific theories claiming biological differences proved Black inferiority. Figures used craniometry, polygenism, and racial hierarchies to argue Black people were a separate, lesser species suited only for labor. This gave slavery a veneer of scientific legitimacy.

Economic & Paternalistic Arguments

Defenders argued slavery was essential to the economic survival of the South and the nation, citing cotton production and profit. Others promoted the paternalist myth, claiming enslaved people were like children needing white guardianship, and that slavery was a benevolent, protective institution rather than exploitation.
