8.3 Effects of the Cold War
Superpower rivalry, proxy wars, and alliances
The US and USSR avoided direct war but fought proxy wars in Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan, arming opposing sides to spread capitalism or communism. Military alliances like NATO (1949) and the Warsaw Pact (1955) divided Europe. Nations also joined the Non-Aligned Movement to avoid choosing sides, seeking aid and trade from both blocs while maintaining independence.
Arms race and space race
Fear of mutual destruction drove a costly nuclear arms race, producing doctrines like MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) and crises such as the Cuban Missile Crisis (1962). Competition extended to space, with Sputnik (1957) and the Apollo moon landing (1969) symbolizing technological and ideological superiority, spurring massive government investment in science and education.
Economic and political effects worldwide
Both superpowers used economic aid and development programs (like the Marshall Plan) to win allies, while newly independent states often modeled governments on capitalist or communist systems. Internal conflicts, military coups, and civil wars in Latin America, Africa, and Asia were frequently intensified by Cold War funding and intervention from the US or USSR.
