8.1 Setting the Stage for the Cold War and Decolonization

WWII's aftermath sets the stage

World War II left Europe devastated, weakening the old imperial powers like Britain, France, and the Netherlands. Two superpowers emerged: the United States and the Soviet Union, each with competing political-economic systems — capitalism/democracy vs. communism. Their rivalry, called the Cold War, shaped global politics without direct military conflict between them.

Ideological divide

The US promoted capitalism and democracy, while the USSR promoted communism and one-party rule. Each sought allies and influence worldwide, leading to proxy wars, economic aid programs (like the Marshall Plan), and military alliances (NATO vs. Warsaw Pact). This ideological competition became global, extending into newly independent nations.

Decolonization begins

Weakened European empires could no longer maintain colonies, and nationalist movements grew stronger, inspired by wartime rhetoric about self-determination (like the Atlantic Charter). Colonies in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East pushed for independence, often navigating Cold War pressures as the US and USSR competed for influence over newly forming states.
