5.9 Reactions to the New Industrial Economy

New economic ideologies emerge

Industrialization's harsh conditions sparked new theories. Capitalism, championed by Adam Smith, favored free markets and limited government. Socialism called for workers or the state to control production. Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels wrote *The Communist Manifesto*, predicting workers (proletariat) would revolt against capitalist owners (bourgeoisie) in class struggle.

Workers organize and reform

Laborers formed labor unions and used strikes to demand better wages, hours, and working conditions. Governments responded with reforms: Britain's Factory Acts limited child labor and work hours, while Germany's Bismarck introduced early social welfare programs (health insurance, pensions) to reduce appeal of socialism.

Global reactions and reformers

Reactions to industrialization spread worldwide. Utopian socialists like Robert Owen created idealized communities. Reformers pushed for education, sanitation, and housing improvements. In some places, governments adopted policies blending capitalism and socialism, while movements for women's rights and abolition of child labor gained strength alongside labor activism.
