4.8 Continuity and Change

What stayed the same (1450–1750)

Despite massive change, many patterns of life continued: most people remained subsistence farmers, patriarchal social structures persisted worldwide, land-based empires still relied on tribute and taxation, and traditional belief systems (Confucianism, Hinduism, Islam, Christianity) continued to shape society and politics.

What changed dramatically

New transoceanic trade networks connected the Americas, Africa, Europe, and Asia. The Columbian Exchange transformed diets, populations, and ecosystems globally. Silver flows from the Americas fueled global commerce, especially with China. Chattel slavery expanded massively, and new maritime empires (Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, British) rivaled older land empires.

Framing continuity and change

Historians analyze this era by comparing causes and effects across regions — noting that change was often uneven: coastal/port regions transformed quickly through trade, while interior regions changed more slowly. Recognizing both continuity and change avoids oversimplifying this period as one of total transformation.
