4.4 Maritime Empires Established
Portugal's Trading-Post Empire
Portugal pioneered maritime expansion, using superior naval technology and cannons to seize key ports. They built a trading-post empire in the Indian Ocean, controlling strategic locations like Goa, Malacca, and Hormuz rather than large territories. This let them dominate the spice trade and force local ships to buy passes (cartaz system) to trade safely.
Spain's Territorial Conquest
Unlike Portugal, Spain conquered vast territories in the Americas, toppling the Aztec and Inca empires using alliances, disease, and superior weapons. Spain established the encomienda system, granting colonists labor rights over Indigenous peoples, and extracted massive silver wealth from mines like Potosí, fueling global trade networks.
Dutch and English Joint-Stock Companies
The Dutch (VOC) and English (EIC) East India Companies were joint-stock companies that pooled investor capital to fund risky voyages while spreading financial risk. These chartered companies gained quasi-governmental powers—raising armies, making treaties, minting coin—to dominate Asian trade, especially the Dutch monopoly over the spice trade in the East Indies.
