4.2 Exploration: Causes and Events
Motives: God, Gold, and Glory
European maritime exploration (1450–1750) was driven by desire for direct access to Asian trade routes (bypassing Ottoman/Italian middlemen), spread of Christianity, and competition among rising centralized states like Portugal and Spain. Access to gold, spices, and other luxury goods promised immense profit and state power.
Technology made it possible
New tools enabled longer, safer voyages: the caravel (fast ship with lateen sails, sailing against wind), the astrolabe and magnetic compass (navigation), improved cartography, and adoption/adaptation of gunpowder weapons like the cannon. Many innovations were borrowed from Chinese, Islamic, and Indian knowledge systems.
Portugal and Spain lead the way
Portugal, sponsored by Henry the Navigator, pioneered routes down the African coast (Bartolomeu Dias) and to India (Vasco da Gama). Spain, after unifying under Ferdinand and Isabella, funded Christopher Columbus's 1492 voyage westward, leading to sustained contact with the Americas and the Treaty of Tordesillas dividing claims.
