2.6 Environmental Consequences of Connectivity
Trade Spread More Than Goods
As trade networks like the Silk Roads, Indian Ocean network, and Trans-Saharan routes intensified, they carried not just silk and spices but also plants, animals, and diseases across vast distances. This exchange transformed environments and societies far beyond the original trading points, reshaping agriculture, diets, and populations worldwide.
Crops and Animals on the Move
New crops spread along trade routes: bananas and rice moved into Africa, while the spread of crops enabled population growth in new regions. Animals like horses, camels, and cattle were also transported, affecting local ecosystems, transportation, agriculture, and warfare in the societies that received them.
Disease Follows Trade
Increased connectivity spread deadly pathogens. The most devastating example was the Black Death (bubonic plague), carried along the Silk Roads from Central/East Asia to the Middle East and Europe in the 1300s, killing an estimated one-third of Europe's population and disrupting labor systems, economies, and social structures.
Key terms
- Black Death
- Bubonic plague pandemic spread via Silk Roads trade routes in the 1300s, killing about a third of Europe's population.
- Environmental consequence of trade
- Increased connectivity spread plants, animals, and diseases across regions, transforming ecosystems and societies.
- Crop diffusion example
- Bananas and rice spread into Africa through trade networks, boosting agricultural output and population growth.
- Silk Roads
- Overland trade network connecting East Asia to the Middle East and Europe; also a pathway for disease transmission like the plague.
- Social impact of plague
- Massive population loss from the Black Death disrupted labor systems and led to significant social and economic changes in Europe.
