2.2 The Mongol Empire and the Making of the Modern World
Mongol conquests unite Eurasia
Beginning under Genghis Khan, the Mongols built the largest contiguous land empire in history, conquering China, Central Asia, Persia, and Russia. Superior cavalry, composite bows, and military organization (units of 10s) let them defeat larger settled empires. The empire later split into four khanates, including the Yuan Dynasty in China.
Pax Mongolica revives trade
Mongol rule created relative peace and safety across the Silk Roads, known as the Pax Mongolica. Mongols promoted trade by protecting merchants, lowering taxes, and using paper money (in Yuan China). This increased the volume of long-distance trade in goods, technology, and ideas between East Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
Cultural diffusion and disease
Mongol integration spread technologies like gunpowder and printing westward, and facilitated diplomatic and religious exchange, including tolerance of multiple faiths. However, the same trade routes that connected Eurasia also spread the Black Death (bubonic plague) from Central Asia into China, the Middle East, and Europe, causing massive demographic decline.
