8.7 America as a World Power

Cold War Crises Abroad

The U.S. faced repeated Cold War tests: the Berlin Airlift (1948-49), the Korean War (1950-53), the Cuban Missile Crisis (1962), and the Vietnam War. Policymakers applied containment and sought to prevent the spread of communism, sometimes through direct military intervention, sometimes through proxy conflicts and covert CIA operations in Latin America, Africa, and Asia.

Vietnam and Its Fallout

U.S. involvement in Vietnam escalated under Kennedy, Johnson (Gulf of Tonkin, 1964), and Nixon, becoming increasingly unpopular. The Tet Offensive (1968) shook public confidence, fueling a growing antiwar movement. Nixon's policy of Vietnamization and eventual withdrawal (1973) left South Vietnam to fall in 1975, prompting debate over U.S. credibility and the limits of containment.

Shifts Toward Détente and New Alliances

By the 1970s, rising costs of Cold War conflicts and domestic dissent pushed leaders toward détente — easing tensions with the Soviet Union and opening relations with China (Nixon's 1972 visit). Agreements like SALT I limited arms buildup. The U.S. also grew involved in the Middle East, supporting Israel and negotiating peace efforts like the Camp David Accords (1978).
