8.4 Economy after 1945

Postwar Economic Boom

After 1945, the U.S. experienced sustained economic growth fueled by pent-up consumer demand, the GI Bill (education, housing, and business loans for veterans), and government spending. Suburbanization exploded as returning veterans bought homes using federal loans, boosting industries like construction, automobiles, and appliances. This era created a large, prosperous middle class.

Labor, Automation, and Business Growth

Union membership peaked, and labor gained better wages/benefits, though strikes (e.g., 1945-46) revealed tensions. Automation and new technology increased productivity but sometimes displaced workers. Multinational corporations grew, aided by advances in management, computers, and globalization, while agribusiness consolidated farming, reducing the number of small family farms.

Economic Struggles of the 1970s

By the 1970s, the boom faltered due to stagflation (high inflation + unemployment), rising oil prices from OPEC embargoes (1973), and increased foreign competition from Japan and Germany. Deindustrialization hit the Rust Belt, while the Sun Belt grew. These shifts spurred debates over government's role in regulating the economy.
