6.1 Contextualizing Period 6

Setting the Stage After the Civil War

By 1865, the Civil War had ended slavery and preserved the Union, but the nation faced massive rebuilding. Reconstruction attempted to integrate freed people into society and reunite North and South. Meanwhile, the seeds of rapid industrialization were already being planted, setting up Period 6 (1865–1898) as an era of explosive economic and social transformation.

Industrialization and a New Economy

New technologies, abundant natural resources, a growing labor supply (including immigrants), and supportive government policies fueled the rise of big business and corporations. The transcontinental railroad, completed in 1869, connected markets nationwide. This period saw the U.S. shift from an agrarian society to an industrial and urban one, creating vast wealth alongside stark inequality.

Social and Political Tensions

Rapid growth brought conflict: farmers and laborers organized against corporate power and economic hardship, while debates raged over immigration, urbanization, and the role of government. The West was transformed by railroad expansion, resource extraction, and conflict with Native Americans, whose land and autonomy were increasingly restricted through policies like the Dawes Act.
