4.1 Contextualizing Period 4
A New Nation Finds Its Footing
Between 1800 and 1848, the young United States expanded rapidly westward while grappling with questions of national identity. The peaceful transfer of power in the 1800 election, growth of political parties, and westward migration set the stage for debates over democracy, slavery, and economic development that defined the era.
Economic and Social Transformation
The Market Revolution transformed the economy through improved transportation (canals, roads, railroads), the rise of factories, and increased commercial agriculture. This fueled urbanization, immigration, and a widening gap between North and South, as the North industrialized while the South doubled down on cotton and slavery.
Expanding Democracy, Enduring Divisions
Jacksonian Democracy expanded political participation for white men while excluding women, Black Americans, and Native peoples. Reform movements (temperance, abolition, women's rights) emerged alongside Indian Removal and continued debates over slavery's expansion, foreshadowing the sectional conflicts of later periods.
