3.2 The Seven Years' War (The French and Indian War)
Origins and Global Context
The Seven Years' War (1754–1763) began as a struggle between Britain and France over control of the Ohio River Valley. It became a global conflict, with the North American theater called the French and Indian War. Competing claims, fur trade rivalries, and alliances with Native nations fueled the fighting between colonial empires.
Alliances and Native Nations
Native groups played a decisive role. The Algonquian peoples largely allied with France, while the Iroquois Confederacy often sided with or leaned toward Britain, though many nations tried to remain neutral or played sides against each other to preserve autonomy and land. Britain's eventual victory shifted power dramatically in the region.
The Treaty of Paris (1763) and Aftermath
Britain's victory led to the Treaty of Paris (1763), giving Britain control of Canada and land east of the Mississippi River; France ceded Louisiana to Spain. Britain issued the Proclamation of 1763, barring colonial settlement west of the Appalachians, angering colonists and straining British-colonial relations, foreshadowing revolutionary tensions.
