2.3 The Regions of British Colonies
New England Colonies
Settled largely by Puritans seeking religious purity, New England's rocky soil and short growing season limited large-scale agriculture. Instead, colonists relied on subsistence farming, fishing, shipbuilding, and trade. Towns centered on close-knit communities and Congregationalist churches, fostering relatively democratic town meetings and an emphasis on literacy and education.
Middle Colonies
Known as the "breadbasket" colonies, the Middle Colonies (New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware) had fertile soil ideal for grain crops like wheat. They attracted a diverse mix of ethnic and religious groups, including Quakers, Germans, and Dutch settlers, leading to greater religious tolerance and a economy based on family farms and commercial trade.
Southern Colonies
The Chesapeake and Lower South relied on cash crop agriculture — tobacco in Virginia/Maryland, rice and indigo further south — grown on large plantations. This demand for labor drove heavy reliance on indentured servitude and, increasingly, enslaved Africans, creating a hierarchical society dominated by wealthy planters and rigid racial slavery codes.
