1.5 Labor, Slavery, and Caste in the Spanish Colonial System

Forced Labor Systems

Spain relied on coerced Native labor to extract wealth from the Americas. The encomienda system granted colonists the right to demand labor or tribute from Indigenous people in exchange for supposed protection and Christianization. Abuses led reformers like Bartolomé de las Casas to criticize the system, prompting Spain to later shift toward the repartimiento system, which limited (but did not end) forced labor.

Rise of the Encomienda and Repartimiento

Under the encomienda, Native peoples suffered from overwork, disease, and violence, causing massive population decline. The repartimiento replaced it, requiring paid but still compulsory labor for public works and mining. Both systems reflected Spain's goal of maximizing resource extraction, especially silver mining, while maintaining Catholic justifications for conquest.

The Casta System

Spanish colonial society developed a racial hierarchy called the casta system, ranking people by ancestry: peninsulares (Spain-born) at the top, then criollos (American-born Spaniards), mestizos (mixed Spanish/Native), mulattos (mixed Spanish/African), Native peoples, and enslaved Africans at the bottom. This system shaped social status, legal rights, and access to wealth and power.
