1.1 Contextualizing Period 1

The world before 1491

Before European contact, the Americas held diverse, complex societies — from the Mississippian mound-builders to the Ancestral Pueblo and the Aztec, Inca, and Maya empires. Populations were large and varied, with agriculture (especially maize), trade networks, and distinct political and religious systems already well established across North and South America.

Europe on the eve of expansion

By the late 1400s, Europe was transformed by the Renaissance, rising nation-states, and new technologies (compass, caravel, astrolabe) that enabled long-distance ocean travel. The fall of Constantinople (1453) pushed Europeans to seek new trade routes to Asia, while the Reconquista in Spain fueled religious zeal and a search for wealth and glory.

Africa's role in a connecting world

West African kingdoms like Songhai, Mali, and Ghana were already linked to trans-Saharan and Mediterranean trade networks, exchanging gold, salt, and slaves. These existing connections meant Africa, Europe, and eventually the Americas would soon become tied together through exploration, setting the stage for the Columbian Exchange.
