AP U.S. Government & Politics · Unit 4: American Political Ideologies & Beliefs

4.1 American Attitudes About Government and Politics

Political culture shapes attitudes

Political culture refers to the widely shared beliefs, values, and norms about government held by citizens. Core American values include liberty, equality, individualism, unity, and the common good. These shared ideals influence how people evaluate government policies and shape debates even among people with different political views.

Sources of political values

Political socialization is the process by which people develop their political beliefs, shaped by family, school, peers, religion, media, and generational or historical events. Political efficacy (belief that one's actions matter) and political trust (confidence in government) vary based on these experiences and affect civic engagement.

Tension between values

American attitudes often reflect tension between competing values, such as liberty vs. order or equality of opportunity vs. equality of outcome. Debates over the proper role and size of government—how much it should intervene in the economy or personal lives—stem from these underlying value conflicts, driving different policy preferences.
