AP Spanish Literature & Culture · Unit 3: El tiempo y el espacio
3.1 Borges & the Labyrinth of Reality
Borges
Jorge Luis Borges (Argentina) blurs dream and reality, time and space. 'El Sur' follows Dahlmann, whose journey south may be real or a dying dream — the story deliberately leaves it ambiguous.
Metafiction
'Borges y yo' splits the author into two selves — the private man and the public 'Borges' — meditating on identity, writing, and self. This is metaliteratura (literature about literature).
Ambiguity
Borges prizes ambigüedad: unresolved endings, doubled realities, and labyrinths of time. The reader must hold multiple interpretations at once.
