3.3 Preterite vs. Imperfect

Two past tenses

Spanish has two simple past tenses. The preterite describes completed actions ('Comí' = I ate). The imperfect describes ongoing, habitual, or background states ('Comía' = I was eating / I used to eat).

Preterite endings

-ar: hablé, hablaste, habló, hablamos, hablasteis, hablaron. -er/-ir: comí, comiste, comió, comimos, comisteis, comieron. Used for a single finished event.

Imperfect endings

-ar: hablaba, hablabas, hablaba, hablábamos... -er/-ir: comía, comías, comía... Used for descriptions, repeated past actions, time, and age: 'Cuando era niño...' (When I was a child...).
