2.2 Ser vs. Estar

Two verbs for 'to be'

Spanish has two verbs for 'to be.' Ser (soy, eres, es, somos, sois, son) is for permanent, defining traits. Estar (estoy, estás, está, estamos, estáis, están) is for states and locations.

When to use SER

Use ser for identity, origin, profession, and characteristics: 'Soy estudiante,' 'Ella es de México,' 'Es alto.' Think of the acronym DOCTOR (Description, Occupation, Characteristic, Time, Origin, Relationship).

When to use ESTAR

Use estar for location, emotions, and temporary conditions: 'Estoy cansado' (I'm tired), 'El libro está en la mesa' (location). Think PLACE (Position, Location, Action, Condition, Emotion).
