1.2 Present Tense of Regular Verbs

Three verb families

Spanish infinitives end in -ar, -er, or -ir (hablar = to speak, comer = to eat, vivir = to live). To conjugate, drop the ending and add the present-tense endings for the subject.

-AR endings

For -ar verbs: yo -o, tú -as, él/ella -a, nosotros -amos, vosotros -áis, ellos -an. So hablar becomes hablo, hablas, habla, hablamos, habláis, hablan.

-ER and -IR endings

-er: como, comes, come, comemos, coméis, comen. -ir: vivo, vives, vive, vivimos, vivís, viven. Notice -er and -ir differ only in the nosotros/vosotros forms.
