3.7 Cognitive Processes in Learning

Learning by watching

Observational learning occurs when we acquire behavior by watching others (models) rather than through direct experience. Albert Bandura's research showed that people, especially children, imitate models — a process central to social learning theory. Whether the observer performs the behavior depends on vicarious reinforcement or punishment — seeing the model rewarded or punished for the act.

Bandura's key findings

In the famous Bobo doll experiment, children who watched an adult act aggressively toward a doll were more likely to imitate that aggression, especially if the model was rewarded. Bandura identified factors like attention, retention, reproduction, and motivation as necessary for observational learning to occur, and highlighted the role of mirror neurons in imitating others' actions.

Cognitive maps and insight

Beyond conditioning, cognition shapes learning. Cognitive maps (Tolman) are mental representations of physical spaces, shown when rats learned maze layouts even without reinforcement — demonstrating latent learning. Insight learning (Köhler) is the sudden realization of a problem's solution without trial-and-error, as seen when chimpanzees stacked boxes to reach food.

Key terms

Observational learning
Learning by watching and imitating the behavior of others (models).
Bobo doll experiment
Bandura's study showing children imitated an adult model's aggression, especially when the model was rewarded.
Latent learning
Learning that occurs without reinforcement and isn't shown until there's motivation to demonstrate it (Tolman's rat studies).
Insight learning
Sudden realization of a problem's solution without gradual trial-and-error (Köhler's chimpanzees).
Cognitive map
A mental representation of a physical space or layout, used to navigate environments.

Experiment

Children watched an adult hit a Bobo doll, then were left alone with the doll.

What did they most often do?

  1. Leave the room
  2. Ignore the doll
  3. Imitate the aggression
  4. Comfort the doll
