2.7 Influences on Cognitive Development
Piaget's Stages Shape Cognitive Growth
Jean Piaget proposed that children move through four stages: sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal operational. Development happens through assimilation (fitting new info into existing schemas) and accommodation (changing schemas to fit new info). Children actively construct understanding rather than passively absorbing it.
Vygotsky's Social Learning View
Lev Vygotsky emphasized that cognitive development is driven by social and cultural interaction. The zone of proximal development (ZPD) is the gap between what a learner can do alone versus with guidance. Scaffolding provides temporary support from a more skilled person to help a child master new skills.
Other Influences on Cognition
Cognitive development is also shaped by biological maturation, nature vs. nurture, and environmental factors like parenting style, education, and culture. Reflexes and inborn temperament interact with experience; enriched environments and social interaction can accelerate reasoning and problem-solving skills over the lifespan.
