4.12 Matrices Modeling Contexts
Matrices as models of change
A matrix can organize data or represent a transition between states, such as population movement, market share, or object positions. Multiplying a matrix by a state vector (or matrix) updates the system to its next stage. Repeated multiplication models how a system evolves over multiple time periods.
Transition matrices and steady states
A transition matrix shows probabilities or proportions of moving between states; each column (or row) often sums to 1. Multiplying it repeatedly by itself or a state vector shows long-term behavior. If the system stabilizes, it reaches a steady state, where the state vector no longer changes under multiplication.
Using matrices for real-world systems
Matrices can model systems of linear equations, geometric transformations (like rotations or reflections), or networked relationships. Matrix operations—addition, multiplication, and inverses—translate real contexts (inventory, traffic flow, encryption) into solvable algebraic systems, letting technology quickly compute large or repeated calculations.
Key terms
- Transition matrix
- A matrix representing probabilities or proportions of change between states in a system.
- State vector
- A vector showing the current values or proportions of each category in a system.
- Steady state
- A condition where the state vector remains unchanged after multiplication by the transition matrix.
- Why use matrices to model systems?
- They organize complex data and allow efficient repeated calculations, especially with technology.
- Matrix multiplication in modeling
- Used to update a system's state from one time period to the next based on transition rules.
