5.3 The て-Form & Progressive

The て-form

The て-form (te-form) connects clauses and builds many structures. It's formed by verb-type rules: 食べる → 食べて, 行く → 行って, 飲む → 飲んで.

Requests and sequencing

〜てください (te kudasai) = please do: 見てください (please look). It also links actions in order: 起きて、食べて、行きます (get up, eat, and go).

Progressive 〜ている

〜ている (te iru) = an ongoing action (like English '-ing'): 食べています (I am eating). It also shows a resulting state: 結婚している (is married).
